Wrinkles can often tell a story: times you’ve laughed, smiled, or even become angry or sad. They’re there on your face for all to see and as we all know, they increase with age (and as your story gets longer). However, if the idea of being such an open book doesn’t appeal to you, or if you’re simply looking to rewind the clock and minimize one of the visible signs of aging, microneedling could be a suitable treatment for you.
Collagen is the most prevalent protein found in your body and forms one of the major building blocks of bones, muscles, skin and more. Your body produces collagen naturally; however with aging, the amount and quality of collagen decreases over time. In addition, things like sunshine, smoking and consuming too much refined sugar can have a negative impact on your collagen levels. As collagen levels decrease, the skin begins to sag, causing wrinkles.
The key aspects of microneedling are in its name: small needles. The treatment involves having small needles pricking the surface area of your skin, encouraging it to produce more collagen. With the increased production of collagen, your skin becomes firmer and more even in texture, thus reducing wrinkles and making the skin appear more youthful. It’s a minimally invasive procedure with little recovery time and patients are often able to return to work after receiving the treatment. Typically, an appointment should take 30 minutes meaning you could even get it done on your lunch break!
Although sunscreen is important on any given day (especially since sun exposure decreases collagen levels as we’ve already pointed out), it’s particularly important after receiving microneedling as your skin can be more sensitive and susceptible to damage. You may notice some redness and minor skin irritation after treatment, but you should otherwise be able to resume normal activities fairly soon. In addition to minimizing wrinkles, microneedling can also be used to treat sun spots and scars, and can minimize the size of pores.
